⏵ character information name:Zhen Yan Wen Kexing canon: Word of Honor age: Around thirty. canon point: After he achieves justice for his parents. history: Born to Zhen Ruyu and Gu Miaomiao, Wen Kexing was actually born Zhen Yan. Much happens in Zhen Yan's childhood and he bears the brunt of his parents' horrific deaths after they are expelled from Healer Valley. Taken in by the Ghost Valley (after they butcher his parents) - because he proves himself a proper little ghost (by being vicious and a cannibal) - he is tortured for twelve years until he becomes the Ghost Lord. During that time, he adopts a toddler (who is also a fierce survivor) and names her Gu Xiang. Gu Xiang follows him on most of his journeys (at least until the pair meet and grow close to Zhou Zishu and Zhang Chengling).
As the Ghost Lord (and thus ruler of Ghost Valley), Wen Kexing finds Zhou Zishu (by chance) again, yet because he drank the waters of Ghost Valley, his memories have become locked and out of his reach. However the more he pursues Zhou Zishu and the more time he spends with him, the more the effects of the water ebb until he recalls everything. Still he seeks revenge for his parents, but before he does so, he must fake his own death. In order to do so, he decides to keep Zhou Zishu out of the loop (since the man is fighting for his life already) and he doesn't realize the effect his tricks will have on the man.
Fortunately, the ploy goes perfectly and he is able to avenge his parents (by paralyzing Zhao Jing with a method he learned from his parents). Unfortunately, and unknown to him at his canon point, Zhou Zishu has removed the nails and shortened his already short life drastically. Thus, for the moment, Wen Kexing is happy and looking forward to his "A-Xu" being healed by Wu Xi. For the first time since his parents' murder, he is at peace and eager to spend the rest of his days with the family he and his A-Xu, his A-Xiang (and even Chengling) have built.
Even so, he knows the Armory - a much sought after treasure trove (by the other martial sects) - is still a threat. Should someone unworthy break into those walls, the information contained within could leads to many people dying just like his parents had. Or worse. Yet Wen Kexing has a trick up his sleeve where that is concerned too. He alone bears the key - a key he gave to his beloved A-Xu without the other man knowing in the form of a hair-stick. When the time comes, he will open the Armory - should it be found - and enter with only his A-Xu in tow. abilities: Taken from here:
"* Excellent Martial Skills - It impresses even Ye Baiyi in their several fights and confrontations. * Excellent Qinggong (轻功) - Wen Kexing doesn’t even leave any footprints and any traces behind while travelling. He was even able to keep up with Zhou Zishu without fail, always keeping a small distance. This is even when the latter's qinggong had reached the stage where he could travel without leaving any traces. Normally, one would stay silent during the traveling, so as not to lose their vital energy, but Wen Kexing didn’t seem to mind it. * Medical Skills - He has some form of medical skills. He methodically sucked out all the poisoned blood in Zhou Zishu's arm and treated his wounds skillfully. He removed the other man’s meridian blocking and took out a small medicine bottle. He swallowed one pill and put one more in his palm, holding it near Zhou Zishu’s mouth. * Storytelling - Due to Wen Kexing's enjoyment for poems, riddles and rhymes, he is often able to disguise stories about himself and his past incredibly well. Often, people aren't able to understand these stories without further thought. * Exceptional Hearing - Like Zhou Zishu, it is clear that he has exceptional hearing too."
personality: As a child, Zhen Yan was playful, sweet but oh so spoiled. He didn't put any importance in his lessons and instead wanted to play. The time he spent with Zhou Zishu was perhaps the best since he got to learn and play at the same time (and he was also given a puppy). Yet his years in the Ghost Valley, witnessing horrors and enduring torture hardened him and he pushed himself to learn any and all martial arts methods as quickly as possible. He was also willing to be gruesome - in order to scare the other ghosts off - and he skinned the previous Ghost Lord in front of everyone - earning himself a reputation of being mad. Truthfully, his emotions were quite unhinged back then - he could be smiling and laughing one moment and choking or gutting someone the next. He was unreadable and very, very dangerous.
Yet, ironically, Gu Xiang is the one who pulls him back to humanity. She had been his one tie to humanity in Ghost Valley and even though she was ill-suited for living in the outside world, she is the one who points out Zhou Zishu. As he spends time with the man and regains his memories, Wen Kexing's ability to feel returns. He also falls in love. The ease with which he reconnects with the man tells him that he has, indeed, met his soulmate. Of course it takes awhile to convince Zhou Zishu of that truth - not that Wen Kexing minds teasing and waiting for his A-Xu.
It's just...sad. He wishes they had stayed together as children or that he and Zishu had met again much sooner. He doesn't feel worthy of his A-Xu and that is why he tries his damnedest to wrap up his vengeance so he can start being a proper soulmate and disciple to his beloved. He even pledges the Ghost Valley and himself to Zhou Zishu, promising that they will work together - as one - no matter who or what they face.
On a lighter note, as he comes to understand himself better (and as he works through his emotions), Wen Kexing becomes a better father/brother figure to Gu Xiang and even Zhang Chengling. His love for both is clear and seeing them finding their happiness in life contents him. No matter what they choose, as long as they are safe and respected, he will have no issue (though of course it's difficult to let his little A-Xiang become a wife and then maybe a mother). Wen Kexing will always tease and make a fuss, but once his heart is captured, he will be true to his family and his friends.
The cruelty of the past only comes back, in spurts, when said family is threatened. Then he will gladly cut down an army without batting an eyelash. He knows where he belongs and he no longer feels his parents calling to him from the world beyond, begging for vengeance. They are resting easy and now, at last, he can see to the life he hadn't known he was starving for while in the Ghost Valley for so many long, dark years.
